Math can be so boring. Of all the subjects we get to teach in elementary school, math must be the easiest to mess up. We give kids 50 problems and tell them they have five minutes to finish them. Even the “smart” kids get tired of this kind of torture soon enough. Then we line our students up in rows of desks and go over story problems. “Sally got on a train headed to Boston…” “A farmer had two horses about ready to give birth…”
What if we had students make their own story problems? At least they would care about who was in the story. Maybe we could make problems out of our science investigations. These are good ideas, but who has time for it?
What we need are more lessons like the six from this website http://www.learner.org/resources/series33.html. They are project based and group based lessons which make our students think instead of glazing over while we work through story problems out of the text book.
